Hi friends! Today I'm over at Scripture Dig talking about one of the "I came" statements of Jesus. We all know He came to die - and He did! But there's more, sweet friend. Oh there's so much more.
After reading the beginning of today's post, please click over to Scripture Dig and read the rest of it there. :-)
There is a lot about God we just don’t understand. Like how He has always existed. No beginning. No end. Just always. Or like how He knows every thought of our hearts and the number of hairs on our heads. Nothing hid. He knows it all. Or like how He is Creator and Sustainer of all that is or ever will be. No one can trump Him. Nothing can stump Him and nothing can undo what He has done. He is all powerful.

Yet, in Philippians 2:5-8 we are told – “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Emphasis mine)
Can you fathom that?! The God of all creation demonstrated what obedience looks like when He placed Himself in a cradle to begin His journey to the cross.

When Thanksgiving is Hard

Happy won't describe everyone's Thanksgiving this year. Empty chairs at the table and broken hearts and lives will be the reality for many.

Life isn't always as festive as a Thanksgiving Day Parade with family, fun and floats. Especially when you're head-long in the middle of a painful place.

Perhaps this year you've lost a loved one. Maybe your mom, your dad, your spouse or even your child. Perhaps you've just received some sort of life-altering, heart-breaking news that has rocked your world and left you completely confused. Maybe you've gone through a divorce, lost your job, lost your home or lost your way.

I'm not sure what you may be going through, but I want you to know that amidst all the wonderful Happy Thanksgiving greetings, you are not forgotten. You are not alone in your sorrow. You are not left to figure this out by yourself.

God sees you. He hears the cry of your heart. He loves you with an everlasting love and nothing can separate you from that love.

For those who are grieving or who are suffering loss, loneliness, sickness or confusion - please let Jesus bring comfort to your heart.
Isaiah 61:1-3 tells us the Father sent Jesus to heal the brokenhearted, to set the captives free, to comfort those who mourn, to give us beauty for ashes, to give us joy in place of mourning, to clothe us with praise and remove the spirit of heaviness, to make us strong like a tree of righteousness...all that He may be glorified.
We all walk through tragic circumstances and painful places. We all get depressed. And while it's okay to go there, it's equally tragic to stay there.

It may be too fresh now. Perhaps you're still in the grips of grief. But my prayer for you today is that you will let our precious Savior heal your broken heart.

Healing doesn't usually take place over night. Give yourself time to heal and let God peel back each layer of pain one day at a time. Soon you will be able to see through your circumstances and learn to laugh again.

So rest in the promise of His healing, sweet friend. He really does make beauty out of ashes!

If this Holiday season is going to be a difficult one and you'd like someone to pray for you, please leave a prayer request in the comment section. I'd be honored to pray for you and with you.

What's for Dinner in Your House?

With just three days before Thanksgiving, I couldn't help but wonder what's for dinner in your house? Do you have Thanksgiving at your house or somewhere else?

We will be celebrating Thanksgiving at Donald's aunt's house. It's where we've spent most of our Thanksgiving Days since we've been married.

The Carussos are a huge Italian family! I still don't remember everyone's name! But the fellowship is sweet and the food is plentiful!
The menu is something like this:
Turkey
Ham
Cornbread Dressing
Oyster Dressing
Mashed Potatoes & Gravy (Yummy - LOTS OF GRAVY)
Squash Casserole
Vegetable Casserole
Corn Casserole
Green Bean Casserole
Sweet Potato Casserole
Sweet Potato Souffle
Green Beans
Carrots
Potato Salad
Green Leaf Salad
Broccoli Salad
Fruit Salad
Cranberry Sauce
Beets
Olives
Pickles
Pecan Pie
Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie
German Chocolate Cake (Donald's mom's specialty!)
Brownies
Fudge
Cheesecake
Cookies
And a plethora of things I can't even remember!
It's amazing how much we can eat and the people we meet in one day! But while food seems to be the focus and unknown family members grow one step closer to knowing each other, a heart of gratitude should really be what this very American holiday should be all about!

So, as I contemplate this coming week and all the festivities that are bound to ensue, I couldn't help but wonder who and what will be on your table?

I'd love for you to take a minute and share a bit of what Thanksgiving looks like in your world! I'd love for you to share what you're thankful for!

3 Ways to Enjoy Thanksgiving Before It's Christmas

Just a shout out to encourage you the weekend before Thanksgiving!

Take a few minutes and reflect on that first Thanksgiving Day. Remember what they were thankful for and who they gave thanks to. Reflect on the plethora of things you should be thankful for and then just...
THANK GOD for all HE has done!

Now here's 3 things you can do to be sure you focus on Thanksgiving before you let your mind shift gears to Christmas:
1. Sit down with your children and write "Thank You" cards to every family member and every friend who will be at dinner. Have your children write their own cards. Exchange them before you eat dinner on Thanksgiving Day.
2. Read the Thanksgiving story on Thanksgiving Day and teach your children why we really celebrate this festive and filling holiday.
3. Use this week to make a "Thank You" list to Jesus. Have your children make their own list. Think about the big and small things you have been blessed with and write it down. During Thanksgiving dinner, pass your list to the person next to you and let them read through you "Thank You" list. Have them put a check next to the things they are thankful for too. Before you all go to sleep, spend some time in prayer going over each list, naming each thing you're thankful for out loud.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us there is a time for everything. Don't skip over the time we've been given to understand and exercise a thankful heart. Enjoy your Thanksgiving before you let yourself get caught up in the Christmas season. And then enjoy the fullness of that special season as well!

Do you struggle with enjoying one season before you get wrapped up in the next? What are some Thanksgiving traditions you celebrate?

I love how God gives velcro to the verses He wants to stick to our hearts in a specific season in our lives! For the past two years, this power-packed passage of Scripture has been a periodic whisper to my will. Yet at times it seems to shout, "Go beyond!"

Just on the heels of Jesus' declaration of mountain moving faith we find these words...

"Will any man of you who has a servant plowing or tending sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, Come at once and take your place at the table? Will he not instead tell him, Get my supper ready and gird yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; then afterward you yourself shall eat and drink? Is he grateful and does he praise the servant because he did what he was ordered to do? Even so on your part, when you have done everything that was assigned and commanded you, say, We are unworthy servants [possessing no merit, for we have not gone beyond our obligation]; we have [merely] done what was our duty to do." Luke 17:7-10 (Emphasis mine)
I remember the first time those verses jumped off the page like something from a pop-up book and I found myself reflecting on my life and at the end of those verses I wrote, "Lord help me go beyond."

When you think about it, Jesus always calls us to more.

In Matthew 5:40-45 we find these decrees...

Verse 40 - Don't just give your tunic (undershirt). Give you cloak (coat) also.
Verse 41 - Don't just go the requested one mile. Go the extra mile.
Verse 42 - Don't turn away a request to borrow something. Give.
Verses 43-44 - Don't just love the lovable and the ones who love you. Love your enemies. Love those who hurt you.

Verse 45 reveals why God calls us to go beyond - that what we do may reveal who we belong to.
We are children of the Most High God. Daughters of the King. More is not only asked of us, it is expected. Going beyond is part of how we let our light shine before men that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.
So, here are a few questions to help us all examine whether or not we are just doing what is necessary to get by or are we going beyond:
  • Do I go out of my way to help others or do I only help if it is convenient?
  • At work, do I go beyond or only do what is necessary?
  • In my home, do I go beyond or do I only do enough to get by?
  • In my marriage, do I go beyond to love my husband or do I just do enough to get by?
  • As a mom, do I go beyond to love and teach my children or do I just do enough to get by?
  • In my church, do I go beyond to serve or do I just do enough to say I'm serving?
  • In my neighborhood, do I go beyond or do I just do enough to be a quiet neighbor?
  • In my community, do I go beyond or do I just do enough to keep out of trouble?
I know this isn't popular It's certainly easier to exist...to just be present. But God calls us to go beyond. And to be honest, if we are going to make our eternities intentional, we must go beyond. It's the life we are called to.

How about you? Do you go beyond? What are some ways you go beyond? Has this challenged or encouraged you?

I hope you sweet friends had a wonderful weekend worshipping the King of kings and Lord of lords! What an awesome privilege we have to call Him Father! For the past 10 weeks our church has been going through a doctrine series on Who God is and I can't begin to tell you how thrilling it's been to peel back the layers of Scripture and be reminded of just how real He is! (I'd love to know what your church has been talking about lately!)

Well, today we are going to look at the 12th way we can make our eternities intentional and it falls right in line with the season we find ourselves in right now. Thanksgiving!

I LOVE this time of year! All the emphasis of being thankful and the intentional reflecting on all that we should be thankful for.

The Thanksgiving holiday we celebrate as Americans may be an important part of our history, but the need to maintain a heart of thanksgiving is essential to our eternity.

Before we get into today's post, I shot a quick video about today's thankful theme,
so if you're getting this in your inbox, please click this link to view it.

Now let's talk turkey about what the Bible says about the significance of thanksgiving and how it relates to our eternities!

In Psalm 100:4 and Psalms 95:2 we find a clear correlation between a thankful heart and the presence of God...
"Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name."
"Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving."
And in Philippians 4:6 we find a revealing relationship between peace, prayer and a thankful heart...
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."
In 2 Corinthians 4:14-15 we discover that God is glorified by thankful hearts who have received His glorious grace...
"We know that God, who raised the Lord Jesus, will also raise us with Jesus and present us to himself together with you. All of this is for your benefit. And as God’s grace reaches more and more people, there will be great thanksgiving, and God will receive more and more glory."
Psalms 107:22 expresses thanksgiving as a sacrifice...
"Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare His works with rejoicing."
We find in Psalm 26:7 that making Him known should stem from a heart of thanksgiving...
"That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving, And tell of all Your wondrous works."
Revelation 7:12 declares that thankfulness in not only an attitude of gratitude we should all have because of the eternal life our loving Father has secured for us, but we are to be thankful because He is worthy of a thankful people who will worship Him well.
“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, Thanksgiving and honor and power and might, Be to our God forever and ever. Amen.”
Thankfulness is in our DNA as Christians. How could we be anything else?
  • How can we adequately worship Him unless we are thankful?
  • How can we proclaim Him to the world if our lives aren't overflowing with thankfulness for so great a love?
  • How can we experience the peace of God if our hearts aren't grateful?
Even in the painful places of our lives we can offer the sacrifice of a thankful heart and glorify God in the process.

Are you thankful? Is your thankful heart obvious to others? Are you willing to offer thanksgiving as a sacrifice even while your heart is hurting? Do you see why it's so important to maintain an attitude of gratitude if we want to make our eternities intentional?

Saturday's Word from the Word

Posted by Stephanie Shott |

In Ecclesiastes 9:11 Solomon tells us,

"The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all."
I remember researching this verse while I was writing my Bible study on Ecclesiastes and thinking about how comforting they really are.

Life doesn't always turn out like we think it should. The fastest, strongest and wisest don't always win. What beautiful words of encouragement for a girl who has never been the fastest, strongest or wisest!

You see, if the fastest, strongest and wisest aren't always a shoo-in, then that means I've got a shot at whatever it is I'm striving for.

Oh, how I love a good underdog story...perhaps that's because I am one. But aren't you thankful that time and chance happen to them all?

Today, I want to encourage your heart, sweet sister! You may look around and wonder if you're ever going to be the one who lands on top? Keep praying and continue to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. You may just be the next underdog to win the victory! (And you just remember...you're already more than a conqueror!)

Have a great weekend!

And if you haven't bought my new Bible study yet, I'd love for you to do just that! This study of Ecclesiastes has definitely changed my perspective and helped sift the circumstances of life through the filter of eternity. I believe it will do the same for you.

Ecclesiastes: Understanding What Matters Most

Good Friday morning, sweet friend! Wow! This week has been a whirlwind for me. I've been working until 12 to 1 a.m. every night this week and I'm whipped! But I've had a pretty productive week, so I am crazy happy about that! Icing on the cake for me is going to be at 5:00 p.m. today when my sweet little grandgirl walks through my front door and we go for a walk, look at the moon and I watch grandpa's heart melt every time that sweet thing says, "Papa"!

I can't help but wonder how you're doing today? Wondering how your week has been?

Please know you're the object of my prayers and I love hearing from you! Thanks for the emails and Facebook messages. You girls rock!

Now lets look at today's #11 way to make our eternities intentional.

Today we're going to take a look at something that obviously will require us to be intentional but it certainly can have some big time eternal ramifications. It is the opportunities we make to volunteer.

You may have noticed that I didn't say the opportunities we find. Volunteering by its very nature is intentional.

It's funny, but when we think of volunteering we conjure up visions of soup kitchens at homeless shelters, filling baskets at Thanksgiving or visiting a nursing home. Our view of volunteering is often very limited.

In today's post, I hope to broaden our scope of service.

In Matthew 5:16, Jesus said, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

Sounds intentional, doesn't it!

Here is a list of 25 ways you can make an eternal difference in the days you are given under the sun:
1. Work that soup kitchen at a homeless shelter
2. Be a mentor at a children's home
3. Work at a local food bank
4. Teach God's Word or perhaps working skills at a local women's shelter
5. Become a reader at the local library
6. Mow your next door neighbors lawn, cook her a meal or clean her house
7. Mentor a single mom
8. Watch someone's children for free
9. Help a caretaker out. Spend the day with the parent she is with 24/7. Stay with him so she can go to church.
10. Help with Special Olympics
11. Help build a home with Habitat for Humanity
12. Visit children who are long term patients in a hospital (like the Ronald McDonald House)
13. Frequent the local nursing home or Veteran's Center
14. Offer to collect needed items for a local school
15. Collect blankets and coats for the homeless and organize a food drive and distribution for them
16. Get your ladies group involved in collecting gently used clothes for teen moms and babies at the local home for unwed mothers
17. Tutor children
18. Teach adults how to read in a local "Learn to Read" program
19. Volunteer for emergency response teams like Samaritan's Purse or the Red Cross
20. Give the elderly or handicap a hand by driving them to the store or to a doctor's appointment
21. Help with a political campaign
22. Serve in your local church
23. Be a teacher's aid in your local school
24. Mentor some children in a low income neighborhood or apartment complex
25. Use your skills, like knitting or sewing to make something special for those in need
Those are just a few of the ways you can intentionally let your light shine, sweet friend! Each time you volunteer a little of your time and talents, you bring light into a very dark world and you make an eternal difference.

Typically, it's not hard - it's just always intentional.

What are some ways you volunteer? Have you seen others do something I haven't mentioned?

Recently, I made a trip to my favorite park by the river for a little time with Jesus. Boats sprinkled the harbor, schools of fish leaped in unison from the surface as if to be playing peek-a-boo and an older gentlemen sat on a bench to my right as he gazed at the soothing scenery.

As I sat eating my Chic-fil-a wrap with a million things on my mind, I began to pray, praise and ponder my ministry, messages and the many women the Lord has given me the privilege sharing His hope with.

I love the joy of sharing Jesus with women and to be honest, it rocks my Bible study world when the group is large! So many wonderful women, yet so many hurting hearts. I remember hearing a quote by Ruth Bell Graham which seems to echo in my heart every time I speak...
"In every pew sits a broken heart."
My prayer was focused on the larger audience. The group of women I had never met, yet had been the object of my prayers for quite some time. I already loved them and couldn't wait to put faces to my prayers.

As I gathered my things to go home I noticed a smaller crowd to my right. A crowd of one.

That elderly gentleman was still staring out over the water. He didn't look upset - in fact he sort of had a smile on his face. But as I passed him by, smiled and talked about the silly fish that had just made another appearance above the surface, I knew I was supposed to say something to him.

After that split second wrestling match with the Lord, I knew I had to be obedient and risk sounding like I was crazy. And so I turned back, looked at him and said...
"I'm not sure why, but the Lord wants me to tell you He loves you and He still has a plan for your life."
As he looked up I noticed tears beginning to well up in his eyes. He stuttered for a minute and said, "I don't know how you knew, but I REALLY needed to know that right now."

When I arrived at the park my mind was fixed on the big things...big ministries...big tasks...big crowds, but God had a crowd of one sitting right in front of my face.

Would my heart be so fixed on the big that I completely missed the small?

How often we see Jesus pursuing the greater call yet never missing the small!

  • In a crowd full of people one small woman touched the hem of His garment and she was made whole. (Matthew 9:19-22)
  • As Jesus entered a synagogue He didn't skip over the needs of the man with a withered hand on His way to speak to the crowds. That man wasn't an interruption to Christ's mission, He was part of His ministry. (Matthew 12:9-14)
  • In Christ's journey to His ultimate earthly work (the cross), He stopped long enough to stoop down and wash His disciple's feet leaving them an example of true leadership and humility. (John 13:12-16)
We often think that if we are going to make an eternal difference that we need to do something big! And while there is nothing wrong with dreaming big, it is equally important that we don't focus so much on the big that we lose sight of the small things along the way.

It's not an either or kind of life. Jesus clearly pursued the greater call, yet He never despised the small things (Zechariah 4:10). He did both.

And if we are going to make our eternities intentional, we need to vision big, but not neglect to do the small things along the way.
As a speaker, it's easy to get caught up in the masses - it's easy to be preoccupied with ministry, messages and the many women we have the responsibility and privilege to share with, yet Jesus calls us to notice the broken heart in the pew...or the sweet, elderly gentleman on the bench in the park. Every eternal difference is equally eternal. So dream big, but do small.
Do you struggle with missing the small because you're so focused on the big? What have you done to purposely pay attention to those in need on your way to fulfilling your calling?

Here's a bit about the book, Hailee:

About the book:

For years, orphan Hailee Annigan was just a ragamuffin in the Cincinnati streets, stealing food to keep her two younger brothers fed. Her thievery landed her in a home for delinquent youngsters, where her life was changed, thanks to her teachers. Now, nineteen-year-old Hailee excitedly heads to Montana to be a teacher, yet she's still plagued by her shameful past and the fear of never seeing her brothers again.

Based on his upbringing in high-society Boston, no one would have guessed that Nate Adams would attend seminary and become a church pastor in rugged Montana. Even now, Nate's parents refuse to put aside their own plans for his future and accept his calling.

When their paths converge, an immediate attraction draws Hailee and Nate together, even as the pressures and demands of others pull them apart. Can the unlikely pair come to terms with their pasts and face the future together?

The newly-produced book trailer for Hailee can be seen here http://youtu.be/LEGoM43jtwA

An Interview With Hailee (The Heroine of the Book):

Hello, Hailee, and thank you so much for talking with me today! To begin, could you just tell us a little bit about yourself? Hello, Stephanie, it’s a pleasure being a guest on your blog today. My name is Hailee Sophia Annigan. I am 19 years old and was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have two younger brothers, Reuben and Philip. I am an orphan and tended to and provided for my brothers after our parents died. My dream is to be a teacher and even as a young girl, I taught my brothers arithmetic and reading from memory from what I had learned when I attended school.

What’s one of your most interesting traits? I tend to be clumsy. It’s the oddest thing, really. I’m not clumsy if I’m running, only if I’m walking and tripping over my own feet. I’ve tripped over stairs, while dancing, and pretty much just while walking down the street. It is quite embarrassing to say the least!

What’s your favorite indulgence? My pa used to tell me I could run like the wind. So I would say my favorite indulgence is running, especially since I have a bit of a competitive streak.

What do you fear more than anything else? More than anything else, I fear never seeing my two younger brothers again. I miss them something dreadful. Now that I’m traveling to a teaching position miles away in Pine Haven, Montana, I fear Reuben, Philip, and I will never be reunited. I also fear that someone will find out about my past and it will jeopardize my new teaching position and my hopes for a new life.

Who’s your favorite person in the world (whether they’re still with you or not), and why? I would have to say my mother. She taught me so much about God and about life in general. I loved to climb into her lab and snuggle, especially during frightening thunderstorms. After she died, I wasn’t sure how I would continue on without her. I miss her dearly and would do anything to have her here.

If you could change one part of your past, undo one decision, what would it be? I wish my brothers and I wouldn’t have been orphaned. Sometimes I don’t understand why things like that happen.

A decision I wish I could undo would be to have done things differently to support my brothers after our parents died.

What is one thing that amazes you? One thing that amazes me is how the Lord never abandons us. I once thought that God left me or was too busy to care about all that was happening in my life. I’ve since learned that that wasn’t the case at all. It was me who left Him and that He is always here for us through the good times and the bad.

Thank you, Stephanie, for graciously allowing me to be interviewed on your blog. I’ve enjoyed being your guest!

So, without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to my sweet friend, Penny Zeller and to her new book (which I HIGHLY recommend) Hailee!
